Context

Modelling has been a core technology in petroleum systems studies for many decades. The old adage that “all models are wrong, but some models are useful” is certainly true. Equally true is the notion that it is often the simplest model that is the most sophisticated. This means that the studies of petroleum systems complexities and modelling tools need to be focused at the rate limiting and controlling properties of a complex modelling system. Enormously complex models of processes that ignore key aspects of charging at a reservoir scale can provide illusions of sophistication that do not match the real world.
